Meet Our Patients: Mahzaib

“We told her that you’ve got a bad leg and we’re going to give you a good one.”

Mahzaib is one of our child patients, who’s overcome the odds and learnt to fly, or in Mahzaib’s case, to walk again. Mahzaib’s story is one of courage and resilience. It’s also an excellent example of how collaborations can make huge impacts and transform lives.

Mahzaib is a seven-year-old from Gujranwala, Punjab. She was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of cancer of the bones or the soft tissues. In her case, this meant the amputation of one of her legs and then fitting her with a prosthetic limb.

This was only possible because of a partnership between Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre and HOPE (House of Orthotic & Prosthetic Excellence) – a prosthetic manufacturer and rehabilitation centre.

Together with HOPE, we’ve helped ensure that patients like Mahzaib – those who’ve had limbs amputated because of cancer – become not just “survivors” but “thrivers”. After battling cancer and winning, we want patients to live life to the full. And if that means getting a prosthetic, we do what we can to facilitate that with our partners.

Mahzaib’s mother explains what a difference the prosthetic leg has made. She says, “We told her that you’ve got a bad leg and we’re going to give you a good one. Thanks to that “good” leg, Mahzaib now goes to school now and actively participates in different school competitions.”

Mahzaib’s mother then went on to show us a video of her daughter as she was learning to take her first steps once again, using her new leg. The prosthetic gave Mahzaib a new lease on life because it also gave her the confidence she needed to follow her dreams. Just a few months after receiving her ‘new’ leg, Mahzaib was recording her own videos, reaching an audience as a young and inspirational vlogger. Nothing can hold this young superstar back!

We believe in holistic treatment that can help restore patients’ lives to normality as soon as possible. To this end, we partner with different organisations for the benefit of our patients. Even after their treatments are complete and they are in remission, we continue assisting where we can, to ensure they live full, healthy lives.
