Meet Our Staff: Dr Usman

Working at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre has been a dream come true for Dr Usman, Consultant Haematologist at our Lahore hospital. We recently interviewed him to uncover his journey, experiences, and what keeps him motivated.

Thank you, Dr Usman, for sparing some time in your busy schedule to talk to us. Firstly, can you tell us about your most memorable experience at Shaukat Khanum?

“During my time here, I’ve had many memorable moments, but one that stands out is meeting a former patient who is now fully recovered and thriving. She was just 21 years old when she came to us, suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), while studying microbiology. Her treatment was incredibly challenging and required a bone marrow transplant.

“After careful consideration by our multi-disciplinary team and the patient herself, we proceeded with the transplant, and it was a success. Fast forward to October 2024, I met her at our annual cancer symposium where she presented a poster. Seeing her thriving and contributing to the field filled me with pride and hope. This is the impact of the care we provide, made possible by the support of our donors.”

Why did you choose haematology as your specialisation?

“Treatment of blood cancer is incredibly expensive, and providing standardised care requires a well-equipped facility. Working in Pakistan, where many people struggle to afford even basic healthcare, there’s often a sense of helplessness as a physician. I wanted to work in a place where I could use my skills in the best way possible at a facility capable of delivering multi-disciplinary care to those who need it most. Shaukat Khanum was the perfect fit for this vision.”

When did your journey with Shaukat Khanum begin?

“It all started in the early 2000s when I saw the hospital’s signboard and decided to check it out. I was immediately impressed with the work being done and promised myself I’d work here one day. After completing my training in the UK and gaining experience abroad, I moved back to Pakistan and joined Shaukat Khanum as a Consultant Haematologist in 2017.

Has your experience lived up to your expectations?

“Absolutely. The hospital’s commitment to patient-centred care and providing cutting-edge treatments is remarkable. Every day brings a sense of fulfilment, knowing we’re making a real difference in the lives of our patients.”

Thank you, Dr Usman for your dedication and all you do for our patients.
