Safi’s Story

Safi Ullah was just three-years-old when he was diagnosed with cancer. With a proposed treatment plan of twelve chemo cycles, Safi’s family feared the little boy wouldn’t survive the intensive treatment.

Safi’s treatment was spread over eleven months. His was a prolonged battle against many factors: cancer; the side effects of his treatment; and loneliness.

Throughout his time in hospital, Safi’s father was with his son. “Being away from home, his mother, and loved ones, was hard on him,” he said. “My son was fighting cancer, but I was afraid he could not fight loneliness.”

Safi’s father wasn’t alone in his concerns for Safi, because at Shaukat Khanum Hospital, we have a support system in place for the emotional wellbeing of our paediatric patients.

“Allah bless the staff at Shaukat Khanum Hospital,” Safi’s father said. “Thanks to the Hospital’s play therapy activities, Safi settled into the hospital environment without fear. He had friends and was always engaged in activities that helped him get his mind off the Sid effects of treatment.”

Safi was declared cancer-free at the end of his treatment. Today, he is a sturdy seven-year-old who has left the trauma of cancer far behind. The sparkle in his eyes has returned, and so has his killer smile.

“Safi is doing well at school,” his father said, “and his dream is to become a doctor so he can give back to society by saving lives.”

Thank you for allowing us to give Safi a fair chance at recovery. Your support is what makes our work possible.
